Three-Goal Second Half Pushes Jeffs Past Hamilton
AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College men’s soccer team built a 2-0 halftime lead and got a pair of second-half scores from Federico Sucre ’13 during a 5-1 win over Hamilton College Saturday afternoon at Hitchcock Field.
Jae Heo ’14 scored once and added three assists for the Lord Jeffs, who also received a goal apiece from James Mooney ’13E and Spencer Noon ’13.
Brian Whiston accounted for Hamilton’s lone goal, with Leo Nizzi recording the assist.
Amherst (4-0-0, 2-0-0 NESCAC)—ranked third in the most recent NSCAA national poll—will travel to take on Middlebury College Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Hamilton (1-4-1, 0-4-1 NESCAC) will get a week to rest before hosting Bates College next Saturday.
Heo helped Amherst carry a 2-0 lead into halftime by notching a pair of assists, feeding Noon at 14:28 and Mooney at 20:31. Whiston’s first goal of the season cut Hamilton’s deficit in half 2:59 into the second frame, as he became the first player to score against Amherst in 2012.
After Heo took a pass from Chris Lerner '13 and pushed Amherst’s lead to 3-1 in the 55th minute, Sucre tallied the final two goals thanks to assists from Heo and Mikey Hoeksema '15.
The Lord Jeffs held a 21-7 advantage in shots, including a 13-2 edge in the opening half. Eric Boole made two saves in the first 78:17 for Hamilton before being replaced by Dan Coulter. Thomas Bull ’16 picked up the win after making one save in 78:03 for Amherst, with Will Poss ’16 playing the final 11:57.
Heo has now scored in each of Amherst’s four games, as he joins Noon and Sucre with a team-best four goals this season.
