SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Amherst co-captain Chris Lerner ’13 earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors Monday after his work on both ends of the field helped the No. 2 Lord Jeffs claim their second consecutive NESCAC title with a 1-0 win over Wesleyan in Saturday's semifinal and a 2-0 shutout of Williams in the championship match Sunday.

Starting at left back, Lerner continued to anchor Division III’s top-ranked defense over the weekend, as the Jeffs posted their 14th and 15th shutouts of the season, improving their nation-leading goals-against average to 0.12 on the way to their second consecutive NESCAC title. The Amherst backs have permitted just two goals on the year and have held opponents without a shot on net in five contests.

Lerner also played a big role in Amherst’s offensive attack Sunday, helping create both goals in the Jeffs’ 2-0 championship win over Williams. Just over a minute into the contest, Lerner bent a long cross into the box, earning his third assist of the year when Jae Heo ’14 headed it in to put Amherst up, 1-0. In the 16th minute, Lerner’s long throw-in from the right sideline found Gabriel Wirz ’15, who nodded it to James Mooney ’13 for a close-range insurance tally.

The Jeffs earned a first-round bye in the upcoming NCAA Tournament and will host the winner of Thursday's Dickinson-Westfield State matchup in second-round action Sunday at 1 p.m.
