“I lived with the young academy players inside the centre du formation right inside the stadium. My daily responsibilities included teaching English classes inside the school, translating articles and news briefs for the [AS Monaco FC] website, and helping out the staff keep the boys on schedule and out of trouble. It was an amazing experience. I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity. I met some great people and got to do some amazing things.
A cool story that summed up my time there is, one night I was woken up in the middle of the night by a loud bang on my door. I thought it was the kids making trouble, so I got out of bed thinking about how to translate ‘stop’ and ‘go to bed’ into French. When I opened the door, Lilian Thuram, one of the best defenders in the world and a World Cup winner with France in 1998, was standing in front of me. He was an academy player at Monaco growing up. He came back to watch the Paris game and visit his old club. I woke the boys up, and he stayed and took pictures and talked with us for a couple of hours. It was a cool night.
I owe much of the opportunities I have had since leaving Monaco to the experience I gained during that year. I was an assistant coach at Lafayette College and had a few internships with the Boston Breakers and the United States Soccer Federation. I cannot say enough how thankful I am to Mr. de Bontin for affording me the chance to be a part of AS Monaco FC. My time there focused my career path and gave me memories that I will take with me for the rest of my life.”
