Jeffs Pick Up First Win of the Season with 1-0 Result at Bates

Sophomore Meg Murphy scored the lone
goal in Amherst's 1-0 win over Bates.

LEWISTON, ME – The Amherst College women’s soccer team fought through the cold and rain to pick up its first win of the 2007 season, earning a 1-0 victory over host Bates College to improve to 1-1-2 (1-0-0 NESCAC). With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 1-2-0 (0-1-0 NESCAC).

It took the Lord Jeffs less than six minutes to get on the board, as sophomore Jill Whiting (Clark, NJ) and junior Stephanie Yesnik (Arlington, VA) set up reigning NESCAC Rookie of the Year Meg Murphy (Springfield, MA) for her first goal of the season. The goal proved to be the only offense the Jeffs would need, as Amherst rode its 1-0 lead the rest of the way.

Amherst dominated for most of the game and was led by a solid effort from the back four, as senior tri-captain Katie Coffey (Northampton, MA), juniors Alanna Darling (Charlton, MA) and Kate Moriarty (Westminster, MA), and sophomore Kathy Nolan (Palo Alto, CA) each put in exceptional defensive efforts. Bates was forced to take mostly long-range shots, and was unable to crack the stifling Amherst defense.

The Jeffs won on a true team effort, as every field player saw action in the game. Amherst out-shot Bates 16-6 on the day, earning six corner kicks to the Bobcats’ one, including four in the second half. Sophomore Lili Ferguson (Winnetka, IL) picked up three saves to earn her second shutout in as many games, while Nini Spalding made three saves of her own for Bates.

The Lord Jeffs take on Springfield College Tuesday, Sept. 18 in their first home game of the season, to be played under the lights at Gooding Field at 7 p.m.
