Jeffs Drop Regular Season Finale at Williams, 2-1, Will Host Middlebury Tomorrow

Junior Natalie Ferraiolo scored her
first goal of the season at Williams.

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Amherst College women’s soccer team finished the regular season this afternoon with a disappointing 2-1 loss at NESCAC and Little Three archrival Williams College. Amherst held a 1-0 edge early in the game, but fell behind 2-1 before halftime. Amherst will play host to Middlebury College in tomorrow’s NESCAC Quarterfinals.

Amherst scored the game’s opening goal in the 20th minute off the foot of junior forward Natalie Ferraiolo (Palo Alto, CA). The striker scored her first goal of the season in front of a large crowd against the program’s biggest rival.

Amherst could not hold the lead though, and over a three minute and twelve second span, which kicked off in the 33rd minute, the Ephs found the net twice for a 2-1 advantage. Williams forward Clare Gallagher scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season in quick succession to steal the game.

With Amherst having no chance to finish atop the NESCAC season-ending standings, and a home playoff game clinched for tomorrow’s quarterfinal round, the Jeffs took a number of starters off the field to rest.

Williams closed out the game with a third score which was ultimately called back for an offsides violation. The point was moot in the game, as the Jeffs fell to 5-5-4 (5-2-2 NESCAC) while Williams finished the regular season 14-0-0 (9-0-0) for the program’s second perfect regular season.

Amherst and Middlebury will play tomorrow in Amherst at noon, while Williams will host next weekend’s NESCAC semifinals and championship.
