Meg Murphy Named NESCAC Player of the Week

AMHERST, MA – Amherst College junior Meg Murphy (Springfield, MA) was named the NESCAC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week today for leading the Lord Jeffs to a 4-1 victory over Middlebury College this past weekend. This is the first Player of the Week honor of Murphy’s career and the first for any Amherst player in 2008.

With Amherst and Middlebury tied at 1-1 midway through the second half, Murphy netted what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 61st minute. After assisting on the Jeffs’ third goal just 48 seconds later, Murphy put the game out of reach with a perfectly-placed free kick that found the back of the net in the game’s 71st minute.

In addition to her numerous regional awards, Murphy is no stranger to being recognized by the NESCAC. After scoring six goals and adding three assists as a first-year, she was named the conference’s Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Conference First Team. Murphy added another First Team selection as a sophomore after leading the Jeffs with 10 points on four goals and a pair of assists.

Murphy’s performance helped snap a three-game unbeaten streak that the Panthers held over Amherst, as the victory helped the Jeffs avenge last year’s 1-0 loss to Middlebury in the NESCAC Championship first round.

Murphy is well on her way to another stellar season and will once again be looked upon as a leader on offense. She and the Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday, Sept. 20 when they host Bates College at noon on Hitchcock Field.
