AMHERST, Mass. – Chloe McKenzie ’14 netted a hat trick to power the seventh-ranked Amherst women’s soccer team to a 9-0 season-opening win over Mount Holyoke.

Holding a decisive 42-5 advantage in shots and 5-0 edge in corners, the Jeffs extended their win streak over the Lyons to 13, while having won 17 of the squads’ last 23 meetings.

Kathryn Nathan ’13 finished with five points on a goal and three assists, while Amanda Brisco ’14 added a pair of helpers. Sarah Duffy ’14, who led the NESCAC in scoring a year ago, was one of seven Amherst players to score, with Emily Little ’13, Mel Stier ’15, Maggie Belnap ’15 and Megan Kim ’16 accounting for the rest of the team’s nine markers.

First-year netminder Holly Burwick made one save en route to her first collegiate win, while sophomore counterpart Mackenzie Randall made 13 stops in the loss.

Wasting little time moving into the attacking third, Nathan ripped a shot from the right side the rattled off the crossbar less than a minute after the opening whistle. Tracking down the rebound in the box, McKenzie nearly put the Jeffs on top, but her volley sailed wide to momentarily keep the game level.

Continuing to push forward in the seventh minute, Nathan moved toward the top of the 18-yard box before slotting a pass to her right into the path of a charging McKenzie. Taking a quick touch toward goal, the junior forward calmly placed a shot into the left corner to put the Jeffs on the board.

Looking to add to the Amherst tally in the 24th minute, Brisco came up the right side before sending a cross into the box. Making a run toward the back post, McKenzie logged her second goal of the night, beating Randall with a low shot into the right corner. Extending the Jeff advantage in the 29th minute, Stier picked out Nathan with a well-placed cross into the six-yard box, giving the home team a 3-0 lead heading into the intermission.

Staying aggressive to start the second half, Amherst won its fourth corner of the night less than five minutes into the period. Lofting a cross into the middle of the box, Nathan found Little, who headed the ball just under the crossbar to up the Jeff lead.

Sending a nice through ball from the midfield into the right side of the box, Nathan once again linked up with McKenzie, who finished off the hat trick in the 64th minute. Just 2:26 later, Brisco snuck a nice lead pass to the right toward Duffy, who blasted her first of the season into the top left corner of the Mount Holyoke net.

Stier upped the Amherst lead to 7-0 at 71:15 with a hard shot from the top of the 18, before Belnap and Kim capped off the scoring with goals in the 79th and 83rd minutes.
