SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Four different Jeffs found the back of the net as the Amherst women’s soccer team posted a 4-0 shutout over Pioneer Valley rival Springfield College.

Recording their third-consecutive clean sheet against the Pride, the Jeffs moved to 2-0-1 overall on the young season and 3-1-1 against Springfield in the teams’ last five meetings.

Outshooting the home team 3-1 over the first 20 minutes of action, Amherst took an early lead at 18:12, as Kate Sisk ’14 hammered a long shot over the defense and past goalkeeper Lucy Gillett ’15 for her first goal of 2013.

Switching fields, Springfield looked to get one right back after winning a corner in the 22nd minute, but Jeff netminder Holly Burwick ’16 stopped senior Vicky DiNatale’s header to preserve the lead. Doubling Amherst’s margin, Megan Kim ’16 scored an unassisted marker at 29:28 of the first half, eluding several defenders before sliding a shot under a diving Gillett to make it 2-0.

Looking to get something going at the start of the second stanza, the Pride controlled possession over the first 15 minutes. Registering four shots and a pair of corners, Springfield kept the pressure on, but Burwick notched two more saves to keep the home team off the board.

Countering in the 62nd minute, Hannah Cooper ’14 ripped a hard shot into the right side of the net to up the lead to 3-0. Less than 10 minutes later, Chloe McKenzie ’14 capped off the scoring, slotting a Sarah Duffy ’14 feed into the left side of the goal.

Springfield finished with a 11-8 shot advantage and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks. Burwick tallied six saves en route to her second win of the season, while Gillett made one stop.

Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 21 at archrival Williams.
