LEWISTON, Maine – The Amherst women’s soccer team posted its fifth shutout this season with a 3-0 win against Bates College Sunday. The Jeffs improved to 3-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the NESCAC while Bates fell to 2-5-1 and 1-4-1 in league play.
It was all defense in the opening minutes of Sunday’s game until Jaimie Cappucci from Bates registered the first shot on net at the 10:23 mark, but Holly Burwick ’16 was there for the save. The offense picked up for both sides and at the 23rd minute, Sarah Duffy ’14 received a cross pass from Mel Stier ’15 and found the back of the net from about 16 yards out.
The teams exchanged shots four minutes later when Leah Humes missed high followed by a wide miss from Megan Kim ’16 shortly after.
The next scoring opportunity for either team occurred at the 36th minute when the Jeffs created great pressure offensively. Kate Sisk ’14 missed a header high of the post and seconds later shot wide but Hannah Cooper ’14 put one past Anabel Schmel at the 37:04 mark as the Jeffs entered the break, up 2-0.
Amherst controlled the tempo offensively for most of the second half. After 35 scoreless minutes, the Jeffs added their third goal of the game at the 80:40 mark. Kim sprinted past Bobcat defenders for a breakaway situation as she sent one in between the posts to give Amherst a 3-0 win.
The Jeffs held a 22-15 shot advantage with six on goal compared to two for the Bobcats. Amherst also held a decisive 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Jeffs are back in action on Thursday, Oct. 3 for a 7 p.m. contest at Mt. Holyoke.
