Amherst Posts 2-3 Record During First Two Days in California

CALIFORNIA – The 10th-ranked Amherst College men’s tennis team played five matches over the last two days, posting a 2-3 record. On Monday afternoon, the Lord Jeffs split a pair of matches against Salisbury and Vanguard, topping Salisbury 7-2, and falling to Vanguard 9-0. Today, Amherst played a trio of matches, squaring off against Cal-Lutheran, Riverside City and Occidental.

Yesterday, the top half of Amherst’s ladder emerged with the win against Salisbury with the second half of the team falling to Vanguard. Against Salisbury, junior Moritz Koenig (Hamburg, Germany) was particularly impressive in just his first match after returning from a semester abroad. Koenig paired with Robbie Sorrel (Scarsdale, NY) for an 8-2 win in doubles, before taking out his Salisbury opposition 6-2, 6-0 in singles play. Vanguard swept all three doubles matches by 8-4 scores, before pulling out all six singles bouts.

Today, Amherst suffered a pair of defeats at the hands of Cal-Lutheran (L 7-2) and Riverside City (L 8-1), before pulling out a 5-2 win over Occidental. Only two Amherst players picked up wins against Cal-Lutheran, with Koenig and senior captain Dan Kim (Springfield, MO) winning their singles matches. Kim is one of five senior captains for the Jeffs, and helped prevent a more lopsided result against Cal-Lutheran with a 6-4, 6-3 win at number five. Against Occidental, Amherst trailed 2-1 after doubles play, but won the first four singles matches before the action was halted for daylight.

The Lord Jeffs will play another pair of matches tomorrow, taking on the University of Redlands and Cypress at 2 p.m.
