Amherst Rolls to 8-1 Win at Trinity; Can Clinch Top Seed with Win Over Midd

Moritz Koenig lost just two games with wins in doubles
and singles play at Trinity.

HARTFORD, CT – The 8th-ranked Amherst College men’s tennis team rolled over 18th-ranked Trinity College 8-1 this afternoon to improve to 21-8 on the year, and 7-0 in the NESCAC. Amherst is slated to host the upcoming NESCAC Championships in a few weeks, and with a win over undefeated Middlebury on May 1st can secure the number one seed in the field.

Amherst dropped just one doubles match to the Bantams, with the top pairing of Austin Chafetz (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) and Robby Sorrel (Scarsdale, NY) falling to the team of Feldman-McCook by an 8-6 score. Amherst’s Moritz Koenig (Hamburg, Germany) and Mark Kahan (Unionville, CT) cruised to an 8-1 win at number two, and Wes Waterman (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) and Sean Doerfler (Douglaston, NY) pulled out a 9-7 (5) win at number three.

In singles action, Amherst swept all six matches, with no one more impressive than Koenig. The Amherst junior dropped just one frame in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Rich Bonfiglio at number three singles. Koenig’s doubles teammate Kahan dropped the first set to McCook 5-7, but then rolled to a pair of 6-1 wins in the second and third stanzas for a three-set victory.

Chafetz got some payback over Spencer Feldman from his doubles loss, winning 6-4, 6-3 at number one, while his doubles teammate, Sorrel, did not play in singles. Stepping into the lineup for singles play was Priit Gross (Tartu, Estonia), who beat Charles McConnell 6-3, 6-4 at number five singles. Waterman and Doerfler pulled out wins to help Amherst complete the singles sweep.

The Lord Jeffs will host a pair of Liberty League foes from upstate New York tomorrow in Amherst, taking on Skidmore College at 11:30 a.m. and Vassar College at 2 p.m. Amherst will wrap up the 2009-10 regular season next Saturday at Middlebury, before hosting the conference tournament May 7-9.
