No. 5 Lord Jeffs Fall to No. 1 Middlebury in Regular Season Finale
MIDDLEBURY, VT – The 5th-ranked Amherst College men’s tennis team suffered its first NESCAC loss of the year this afternoon, falling to top-ranked Middlebury College 5-4 in the regular season finale for Amherst. The Lord Jeffs drop to 7-1 in conference play, and will likely draw the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NESCAC Championship to be played in Amherst next weekend.
In doubles play, Middlebury took a 2-1 lead over Amherst by winning the first and third matches by 8-5 and 8-4 scores, while the Jeffs gutted out a win at number two. Mark Kahan (Unionville, CT) and Moritz Koenig (Hamburg, Germany) fought off the doubles sweep from Middlebury by winning 7-1 in the tiebreaker for a 9-8 victory at number two doubles.
In singles action, the two top teams in the region split the six matches, allowing the Panthers to hold on for the narrow victory, 5-4. Amherst had wins at numbers one, four and six to make things interesting. Austin Chafetz (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) defeated Andrew Peters 6-2, 6-1 at number one, making his case for the top singles ranking in the Northeast. Chafetz entered the say ranked third in the region behind Peters and Bowdoin’s Steven Sullivan, but after today’s convincing win should rise before the NCAA Tournament Individual field is announced.
Also winning in singles play for Amherst were Wes Waterman (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) and Sean Doerfler (Douglaston, NY). Waterman won 7-5, 6-4 at number four over Peter Odell, while Doerfler won 6-2, 6-3 at number six over Alec Parower.
These two top teams will likely see each other at least one more time with the NESCAC and NCAA Tournaments still on the horizon. Matchups for the NESCAC Tournament will be determined in the next few days, with details posted on both the Amherst Athletics and NESCAC websites.
