Amherst Faces Tough Competition at Dartmouth Invite

Tony Sheng earned a pair of victories in Flight D.

HANOVER, NH – The Amherst College men’s tennis team wrapped up the three-day Dartmouth College Invitational Sunday afternoon. Ten Lord Jeff individuals and four doubles pairs competed against top Division III colleges and several Division I schools throughout the weekend.

Competing in the top flight for Amherst was sophomore Austin Chafetz (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA). After falling to Marist’s Christian Conley in his first match of the weekend, Chafetz earned a pair of impressive wins over fellow NESCAC standouts. The Lord Jeff star came from behind to defeat Middlebury’s Eliot Jia in a tiebreaker, and followed up with a tiebreaking win over Nick Lebedoff of Williams.

Picking up one victory apiece in Flight B and Flight C were junior Priit Gross (Tartu, Estonia) and sophomore Julian Camacho (New York, NY), respectively. Gross defeated Loic Sessagesimi of Marist in his first match (6-2, 7-6) before falling to Peter Odell of Middlebury and Michael Laser of Dartmouth. Camacho dropped his first two matches but managed to close out his weekend with a 6-4, 6-2 win over James Bernstein of Boston University.

Sophomore Jon Thaler (Villanova, PA) and junior Tony Sheng (Aurora, IL) each competed in Flight D, with Sheng picking up a pair of wins over opponents from Marist and BU. Senior Scott London (Chevy Chase, MD) and first-year Will Rives (Manchester, MA) kept things close in their matches but struggled against strong competition in Flights E and F.

Flight G saw senior Alex Kaufman (Woodside, CA) and junior Alex Gumport (Summit, NJ) each win two matches, as the two players combined for three wins over opponents from Boston University while struggling against the NESCAC. Rounding out singles competition for Amherst was senior Dan Gonzalez (West Roxbury, MA), who defeated Charlie Hammond of Williams (6-3, 6-4) before dropping his final two matches.

In doubles competition, Chafetz and Gross teamed up to win a pair of matches in Flight A. The duo kicked things off with a 9-7 win over a Marist pair and closed out the weekend with a 9-7 win over a team from Buffalo, with a tough 8-6 loss to Dartmouth sandwiched in between.

Flight B featured another two victories for Amherst, as Thaler and Camacho picked up wins over pairs from Buffalo and Williams in their first and third matches, respectively. Sheng and Gumport defeated BU’s James Bernstein and Marcus van Berckel to close out their weekend at 1-2 in Flight C. London and Rives defeated a Williams duo in Flight D, also finishing the weekend with a 1-2 record.

The Lord Jeffs will split up next weekend to take on Swarthmore, Case Western, Carnegie Mellon and Rochester in dual match action. Select members of the team will also travel to Bates for the Wallach Invitational.
