AMHERST, MA – The 14th-ranked Amherst College men’s tennis team kicked off their 2008 NESCAC schedule this afternoon against Little Three archrival Wesleyan University. Both the Lord Jeffs and Cardinals enter today’s match-up with 5-3 overall records, before playing in their first league match of the season. Amherst lost just a lone singles match en route to an 8-1 win.

In doubles play, Amherst jumped out to a 3-0 lead with an impressive performance on all three courts. The top Jeff pairing of junior Zack Lerner (Scarsdale, NY) and first-year Sean Doerfler (Douglaston, NY) defeated Matthew O’Connell and Matt Schaff 8-1, while senior Mike Mintz (New York, NY) paired with classmate Tal Avrahami (Riverdale, NY) to win by the same score at number three doubles.

In singles play, Amherst continued to play well as number three Daniel Kim (Springfield, MO) took out Pair Gerdes in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. In the second match of the day to finish, Wesleyan scored its first team point with a 6-3, 6-3 win at the top singles spot. O’Connell defeated Doerffler for that point, after Lerner was forced to pull out of singles play and bump the entire Amherst ladder up a spot.

The Lord Jeffs responded to the loss with a total team effort, taking the remaining singles matches without blinking. Senior Jeff Wan (Staten Island, NY) defeated Michael Frank without surrendering a single game, 6-0, 6-0.

First-year Tony Sheng (Aurora, IL) stepped up to the plate when Lerner was removed from the top of the ladder to take his spot in the number six match against Wesleyan’s Max Schenkein. Sheng ceased the opportunity, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

First-year Moritz Koenig (Hamburg, Germany) and Mintz completed the rout with two-set victories. The win lifts the Lord Jeffs to 6-3 for the season, and 1-0 in NESCAC play.
