Lord Jeffs Compete at Dartmouth Invitational Tournament

GrossSophomore transfer Priit Gross stood out by reaching the finals of the B Flight.By Moritz Koenig '11

HANOVER, NH – The Amherst College men’s tennis team traveled to Dartmouth College this weekend for a fall invitational tournament that featured three days of tough competition. The Lord Jeffs faced off against Division I opponents from Niagara Univerity, Army, Loyola Marymount University, Colgate University, and the University of Buffalo as well as NESCAC and Little Three archrival Williams College.

The young Amherst squad only featured four returning players from last year’s team, while five first-years saw a chance to compete on the collegiate level for the first time. The tournament was divided into eight singles flights, as well as four doubles draws, with six matches of guaranteed competition.

Sophomore transfer Priit Gross (Tartu, Estonia) stood out as he reached the finals of the B-flight, outlasting his opponents from Niagara and Loyola Marymount in third-set tiebreakers before falling in the finals to Dartmouth’s Ari Gayer. Robby Sorrel (Scarsdale, NY) capped off his first collegiate tournament with a third place finish in his flight, while his classmate Wesley Waterman (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) bounced back from a first round loss to Dartmouth’s Malizia, and went on to win the back draw of Flight 4.

The young squad compiled a .500 record in singles and doubles against tough opponents, and will continue its fall season with the first dual matches of the year this  week. The team will split squads with one half travelling to Bates College to compete in the Wallach Invitational before taking on Wesleyan University on Monday. At the same time, the other half of the team will be going on a road trip to take on national powerhouses Johns Hopkins University, Carnegie Mellon University, and Kenyon University, ranked 19th, 14th and 7th, respectively.
