No. 2 Amherst Edged by No. 4 Claremont, 6-3

Mark Kahan '13 picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2.

CLAREMONT, CA – In a battle of two of the nation’s top men’s tennis teams, fourth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps defended its home courts by upsetting second-ranked Amherst College, 6-3, to mark the Lord Jeffs’ first loss of the season (17-1).

After posting a 10-5 record during last year’s West Coast road trip, Amherst won the first 17 matches of the 2010-11 season to set up a highly anticipated showdown with Claremont. Saturday’s match didn’t disappoint, but it was the Stags who took two out of three doubles matches and held on to improve to 13-2.

After Amherst’s Mark Kahan ’13 (Unionville, CT) and Joey Fritz ’14 (Cincinnati, OH) suffered an 8-6 loss at No. 2, Luis Rattenhuber ’13 (Munich, Germany) and Justin Reindel ’14 (Mamaroneck, NY) evened the score by picking up an 8-5 win at No. 3. The Stags would hold the edge heading into singles play when their top duo got past Wes Waterman ’12 (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) and Moritz Koenig ’11 (Hamburg, Germany), 8-5.

Kahan tied the score at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the number two singles bout, but the Stags would secure the team victory by taking a 5-2 lead with wins at numbers one, five and six. The final two matches required a third-set tiebreaker, with Waterman coming from behind to win at number four (3-6, 7-5, 10-8) and Fritz getting edged in a great matchup at number three (7-5, 6-7, 11-9).

The Lord Jeffs will return to action Saturday, Mar. 26, when the squad splits to take on Wesleyan and MIT.
