Jeffs Move to 21-1 with Wins Over Vassar, Skidmore

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The fourth-ranked Amherst College men’s tennis team improved to 21-1 with a pair of wins Saturday afternoon at Vassar College’s Walker Field House. After defeating the host Brewers by a score of 8-1, the Lord Jeffs earned a 7-2 win over Skidmore College.

Robby Sorrel ’12 (Scarsdale, NY) and Chris Dale ’14 (Austin, TX) picked up an 8-3 victory against 29th-ranked Vassar’s Josh Kessler and Dan Freeman to help the Jeffs sweep the doubles matches. The number five and six singles bouts required third sets, with Tony Sheng ’11 (Aurora, IL) coming from behind to defeat Joshua Jasso (4-6, 6-3, 6-1) and Sorrel getting past Kessler (7-5, 4-6, 10-6).

The Lord Jeffs followed with a win over the 28th-ranked Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College to mark their 21st victory of the season.They won the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matchups and had four singles matches go to a third set, with Mark Kahan '13 (Unionville, CT) and Wes Waterman '12 (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) winning at No. 1 and No. 2 in come-from-behind fashion.

This is the third consecutive year Amherst has won at least 20 matches, as the Jeffs finished at 28-7 in 2009 and 27-11 in 2010. With eight regular-season matches remaining, Amherst has a chance to challenge the program record for single-season victories.

The Jeffs will return to action Saturday, Apr. 9, when they host 14th-ranked Bowdoin College in a conference match at 11 a.m. Amherst will then host ninth-ranked Williams on Sunday, Apr. 10.
