Amherst will take on 11th-ranked Trinity (TX) Tuesday, May 24 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center and Pauley Tennis Complex in Claremont, Calif., with a trip to the national semifinals on the line. The Lord Jeffs defeated Trinity during the regular season by a score of 7-2.
Moritz Koenig and Wes Waterman earned an 8-2 win at number two, giving Amherst a 1-0 lead with their seventh consecutive victory. Mark Kahan and Chris Dale followed with an 8-3 result at number three, while Austin Chafetz and Luis Rattenhuber improved to 5-0 as a duo with an 8-4 win in the top match.
Kahan then continued his dominant season with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Steve Fernandez in the number two singles match, as his 15th consecutive victory gave Amherst a 4-0 advantage. Chafetz sealed the deal for the Lord Jeffs with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jonathan Yu at number three, marking Amherst’s fourth consecutive 5-0 victory of the season.
Due to inclement weather, Sunday’s match was moved indoors to the Grande Meadows Tennis Club in Longmeadow, Mass. With only four courts to use, the number five and six singles matches never began. When play was stopped, Luis Rattenhuber was leading TCNJ’s Jeremy Eckardt in the top matchup, 6-4, 2-2, while Amherst’s Joey Fritz was tied at 2-2 with TJ Riley in the first set at number four.
