Koenig and Waterman Place 6th in Division III at ITAs
MOBILE, AL – The Amherst College tandem of Moritz Koenig (Hambrug, Germany) and Wes Waterman (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) earned a spot in the 2010 USTA/ITA National Small College Championship earlier this fall, traveling to Alabama this weekend for the annual tournament. The Lord Jeffs placed sixth nationally in Division III, falling short of their dream of earning a spot in the Division I doubles tournament.
After winning the ITA Regionals earlier this fall, Koenig and Waterman were seeded fourth in the eight-team Division III doubles bracket. After an opening round loss to Pidtowski and Sorich of Illinois Wesleyan by a score of 1-6, 6-4, 10-7, the Lord Jeff pair advanced to the 5th place match with a straight set win over a pair from UW-Whitewater.
Koenig and Waterman topped Whitewater’s Macey and Scanlan by a 6-1, 6-2 score, setting up a showdown this afternoon with Skidmore College’s Cheng and Sherpa. Amherst’s weekend ended on a tough note though, as the Jeffs fell to the Thoroughbred team 6-4, 7-5 to settle for sixth place in Division III. Despite posting a 1-2 record for the trip, Koenig and Waterman both earned All-American status for their play this fall.
The Lord Jeffs wrapped up the fall schedule with a perfect 3-0 record, and will break from dual matches until the spring season. A squad of junior varsity players will head to Harvard for an invitational tournament at the end of the month in the only remaining action this fall.
