COMPLETE RESULTS

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Mark Kahan ’13 picked up a pair of wins to advance to the men’s individual singles finals, while Jordan Brewer ’14 and Gabby Devlin ’14 earned a ticket to the women’s doubles championship in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Falling to Kenyon’s Paul Burgin, 6-1, to open his quarterfinal match, Kahan notched a 6-4 victory in the second set to stay alive. Carrying the momentum into the third, the Amherst senior ousted the ITA region’s second-ranked player with another 6-4 triumph. Facing Trinity’s (TX) Aaron Skinner in the semis, Kahan took an early edge with a 6-4 win in the first frame before dispatching of his Tiger counterpart with an identical 6-4 margin in the second.

With 17 singles wins under his belt in 2012-13, Kahan will meet Adam Putterman of Washington University-St. Louis in tomorrow’s title tilt scheduled for 9 a.m. Putterman, who lost to the Jeffs’ Joey Fritz ’14, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles when the squads met in the team championships, defeated North Carolina Wesleyan’s Robert Kjellberg, 6-3, 7-5, in the day’s other semifinal.

Advancing to the women’s singles quarterfinals, Brewer opened the day with a decisive 6-2, 6-2, victory over Emory’s Beatrice Rosen, the Atlantic South region’s seventh ranked player. The semifinals pitted familiar foes as Brewer, ranked second in the northeast, drew top-seeded Lok-Sze Leung of Middlebury. Losing 6-3 in the first set, the Amherst junior fell 7-5 in the second, closing out the season with a 19-9 overall record. Of those nine losses, four came to Leung, who earned a second consecutive berth into the singles finals after finishing as the runner-up a year ago.

Back in action for doubles play, Brewer and Devlin scored a resounding 6-1 first set triumph over Sewanee’s Jenny and Lindsey Liles. The Jeff duo then took the first two games of the second set en route to a 6-0 shutout. Now 20-4 on the year, Brewer and Devlin advance to face Emory’s Gabrielle Clark and Annette Sullivan, who defeated the Jeff tandem (8-6) just days earlier in the teams’ championship semifinal match.
