BALTIMORE, Md. – Andrew Yaraghi ’16 continued his impressive rookie fall with a win at first singles, but it was not enough as the Amherst College men’s tennis team fell to host Johns Hopkins University 6-3 Saturday. Mark Kahan ’13 was provided the Jeffs’ other singles triumph, while Yaraghi and Ben Fife ’16 won their doubles match.

After defeating Fife in the postponed final of the ITA Regional Championship earlier this week, Yaraghi faced another regional champion in the day’s final match, scoring a comeback win over JHU’s Andy Hersh, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3).

The match’s outcome had been decided long before the first singles’ tilt, however, as the Blue Jay’s Jensen Reiter defeated Jon Cypers ’15 at fifth singles, 6-4, 7-5, to clinch Hopkins’ first win over Amherst in the teams’ fifth-ever meeting.
The day started with doubles play, with the Blue Jays notching victories in first and third competition before Fife and Yaraghi rallied for a 9-7 win in the tiebreaker to beat Hersh and Jeff Kamei, 9-8 at second.
Tanner Brown gave Hopkins a 3-1 lead, defeating Fife at second singles, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). Kahan kept things close at third, however, rallying to beat Ben Hwang, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 before Erik Lim topped Amherst’s Aaron Revzin ’16 at fourth singles, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, to set up Reiter’s clinching win. Andrew Scheiner ’15 fell to the Blue Jays’ Jeremy Schwartz, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-2, in the remaining singles contest before Yaraghi’s victory.

The Jeffs continue their weekend road trip tomorrow at Carnegie Mellon with a dual match starting at 1 p.m.
