HADLEY, Mass. – Seniors Joey Fritz and Jordan Brewer of the Amherst College men’s and women’s tennis teams were honored by the NESCAC league office Monday with Player of the Week laurels.
Fritz, of the third-ranked men’s team, was named the NESCAC Men’s Player of the Week for his stellar play during a 2-0 stretch in league play against Bates and No. 12 Bowdoin. Brewer, of the fourth-ranked women’s squad, earned NESCAC Women’s Co-Player of the Week honors alongside Joulia Likhanskaia ’17 of Bowdoin.
Fritz was perfect from the No. 1 court in both singles and doubles action during the week. After dropping the first set against Bates, 7-5, in singles action, he retaliated nicely with a 6-2 win in set two before capturing the third set super tiebreaker, 10-7. Paired with doubles partner Justin Reindel ’14, the duo claimed No. 1 doubles as well with an 8-5 win as the Jeffs swept the Bobcats, 9-0.
The following day against the 12th-ranked Polar Bears, Fritz avenged another first set loss in singles play to take set two and three, 6-2 and 6-4, respectively. Alongside teammate Reindel in doubles play, the duo won two close pro sets, 9-8 (7-3) to help lead Amherst to a 7-2 win against Bowdoin.
Brewer picked up wins from No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles as the third-ranked Jeffs edged seventh-ranked Bowdoin, 6-3. The senior clinched the victory in singles play with wins of 6-3, 6-4, and also claimed an 8-3 win in doubles play with partner Gabby Devlin ’14.
The senior star picked up another win in doubles play over Bates as Amherst concluded the week with a 2-0 mark in conference action. Brewer and Devlin cruised in No. 1 doubles, claiming an 8-0 sweep.
