Jeffs Advance With 5-1 Win Over Williams

AMHERST, Mass. – Downing its archrival for the second time this season the fourth-ranked Amherst men’s tennis team advanced to the finals of the 2014 NESCAC Championship thanks to a 5-1 victory over archrival Williams College.

Improving to 30-3 (8-1 NESCAC) overall, the Jeffs will meet top-seeded Middlebury, who defeated No. 4 seed Bowdoin (5-0), in the tomorrow’s championship match slated for 2 p.m.

Getting the Jeffs off to a fast start, Andrew Yaraghi ’16 and Aaron Revzin ’16 dispatched of Rohan Shastri ’17 and Jose Raventos ’16 at second doubles, 8-6. Notching an 8-6 triumph of their own, Michael Solimano ’16 and Chris Dale ’14 downed Alexander Schidlovsky ’16 and Brian Astrachan ’16 in the third slot. Completing Amherst’s doubles sweep, Joey Fritz ’14 and Justin Reindel ’14 took care of Matt Micheli ’14 and Conrad Harron ’17, 8-6.

Notching the Ephs’ first point, Raventos downed Ben Fife ’16 at sixth singles, 6-1, 6-0. Earning a 6-1 decision in the first set of his fifth singles match against Howard Weiss ’16, Reindel secured an identical 6-1 triumph in the second to inch Amherst closer to victory. Clinching the match, Anton Zykov ’17 bested Shastri, 6-4, 6-2 in the third spot.

Fritz led Micheli at No. 1 singles at the time of completion, 7-5, 5-2, while Solimano and Harron were tied at a set apiece (5-7, 6-4). Schidlovsky held onto a slim 3-6, 6-2, 0-1 margin over Yaraghi at fourth singles.
