No.1 Amherst Opens Spring With 9-0 Win at Claremont-Mudd Scripps
Rookie Caroline Richman won her match 6-1, 6-1.
CLAREMONT, CA – The top-ranked Amherst College women’s tennis team opened up its annual spring break tour of the west coast this afternoon with a 9-0 sweep of Claremont-Mudd Scripps College. The Lord Jeffs dominated the doubles portion of the match, before winning five of the six singles bouts in straight sets. Senior quad-captain Brittany Berckes (Secaucas, NJ) needed a super-tiebreaker to pull out her three-set match against Jaclyn Smrecek to complete the clean sweep.
In just Amherst’s second dual match of the academic year, the Lord Jeffs looked sharp. In the fall, Amherst played only one head-to-head match, beating defending national champion Williams 6-3 in a re-match of the 2009 NCAA Division III title game. The Jeffs took five months away from competition following the NEWITTs in mid-October, but look primed for another deep run in the NCAAs this spring.
Against CMS, Amherst welcomed the return of junior Natasha Brown (Woodland Hills, CA) to the lineup after a semester abroad. Brown played beside senior quad-captain Jill Wexler (Beverly, MA) in doubles, winning 8-4 over the team of Feldhauser/Thomlison from CMS. In singles action, Brown was one of Amherst’s top performers with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Allie Hsu in the number four spot. Only one other player won their match while losing just two games, that being rookie Caroline Richman (Pacific Palisades, CA) with a 6-1, 6-1 result.
The Jeffs will play another four tough matches before returning to campus to open NESCAC conference play at Conn. College on March 28. Included in those matches are No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer, Sewanee, Concordia and No. 23 Chapman. Amherst will play at Pomona tomorrow in what surely will be its toughest test of the trip.
