Amherst Wraps Spring Break Trip With 8-1 Win Over Chapman
CALIFORNIA –The top-ranked Amherst College women's tennis team rebounded from a loss to NAIA foe Concordia yesterday with an 8-1 win against Chapman this afternoon. The victory improves Amherst to 5-0 against Division III opponents this year.
Today’s match against Chapman was Amherst’s final bout of their annual Spring Break trip to California. During the trip, Amherst posed a 4-1 overall record, but beat all four NCAA Division III teams it faced by a combined 34-2. Amherst beat both Claremont and Sewanee 9-0, and topped Pomona and Chapman 8-1.
In today’s win over Chapman, Amherst put forward the doubles pairing of Jill Wexler (Beverly, MA) and Natasha Brown (Los Angeles, CA) at number one for the first time this week. The pair pulled out a hard-fought 8-6 win over Fox-Lewis to help the Lord Jeffs take a clean sweep in doubles play.
In singles action, Amherst senior captain Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) returned from a minor injury to play in the number one match. Berckes won the first set 6-4, before falling 7-5 in the second stanza. Chapman’s Liz Lewis took a 3-0 lead in the third set, before Berckes retired. The result was Chapman’s only win of the match.
Laken King (Laurelton, NY) was particularly impressive in the number six match, winning 6-0, 6-1, while Brown lost just a pair of games to Logan at number five (6-0, 6-2). Sophomore Laura Danzig (Allendale, NY) earned another lopsided 6-2, 6-3 win at number two.
Amherst will fly back to the east coast tomorrow, and open NESCAC play next Sunday, March 28 against Conn. College at 1 p.m.
