Top-ranked Jeffs Win NESCAC Season Opener 9-0 at Conn.

NEW LONDON, CT – The top-ranked Amherst College women’s tennis team opened up the 2010 NESCAC season this afternoon with a road dual match at Connecticut College. The Lord Jeffs elected to rest a handful of the regular names from their lineup this afternoon, but still emerged with a 9-0 sweep of the Camels.

In doubles action, Amherst paired senior quad-captain Jennifer Ouyang (Pasadena, CA) with rookie Caroline Richman for an 8-1 win at number one. Junior Charlotte Wilinsky (Florence, MA) paired with classmate Jen Kim (Springfield, MO) at number two for an 8-1 win, while Priya Kumar (Media, PA) and Ashley McCall (Cincinnati, OH) won 8-3 at number three.

In singles play, Richman was Amherst’s cleanest winner, surrendering just a single game in a 6-0, 6-1, straight-set victory at number one. Wilinsky followed suit with a 6-3, 6-0 win at number two over Becca Hiupel. Ouyang played the toughest match of the day at number three, needing three sets for a win. After dropping the first set 3-6, Ouyang pulled out a 6-1 win in the second frame, and edged Jess Bender 7-5 in the decisive third set for the win.

In the second half of the lineup, Kumar won 7-5, 6-1 over Caroline Barone at number four, Kim edged Sara Krivoshik 7-6, 6-3 at number five, and Sarah Nyirjesy (Rydal, PA) pulled out a 6-4, 6-1 win over Jen Herbert at number six.
