No. 1 Amherst Downs Bates 9-0 in Maine

LEWISTON, MAINE – The Amherst College women’s tennis team opened up a weekend swing to Maine this afternoon with a 9-0 win at Bates College. The Lord Jeffs, ranked No. 1 in the nation, will complete their trip tomorrow afternoon at Bowdoin College.

Amherst swept the three doubles matches without giving up more than two games in any matchup, before heading into singles play for a six-pack of straight set wins. Senior captain Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) played well in the top spot, earning an 8-1 doubles win alongside Laura Danzig (Allendale, NY), before winning 6-4, 6-2 at number one singles. Danzig won 6-1, 6-1 at number two singles.

Senior captain Jill Wexler (Beverly, MA) also earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at number four, while twin sisters Carlissa and Laken King (Laurelton, NY) won at numbers three and six, respectively. Completing the sweep for Amherst was Natasha Brown (Woodland Hills, CA), who won 6-2, 6-0 at number five.

The Jeffs will take on the Polar Bears in Brunswick tomorrow at 11 a.m. before returning home to play their final five matches of the regular season at home. Amherst will face five NESCAC schools in those matches, and then will host the conference tournament May 7-9, 2010.
