Amherst Loses Hard-Fought Battle with Williams, 5-4

Alicia Menezes
Senior Alicia Menezes helped Amherst earn two points against archrival Williams College.

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women’s tennis team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of archrival Williams College, as the Ephs were able to take two of three doubles matches from the host Lord Jeffs before splitting singles play. Amherst moves to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the NESCAC, while Williams improves to 10-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

When the Ephs and Jeffs met in the fall, Amherst was able to sweep doubles play en route to its 5-4 victory in Williamstown. This time around, however, only Amherst’s top doubles pair of Alicia Menezes (Staten Island, NY) and Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) was able to earn a point, as the two took an 8-6 win.

Menezes went on to win her singles match as well, defeating Ashley Parsons in the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 7-5. Berckes took the first set against Cary Gibson in the top spot but could not hang on for the win, as Gibson stormed back to win the next two sets, 6-0, 6-3.

Grace Baljon defeated Amherst sophomore Jill Wexler (Beverly, MA) in the second singles match, 6-4, 6-2, but first-years Laken King (Laurelton, NY) and Natasha Brown (Woodland Hills, CA) won in the No. 5 and No. 6 matches, respectively, to notch the teams up at 4-4.

Senior Monica Snyder (Newton, MA) earned a 6-4 win in the first set to put Amherst in a good spot to take the crucial match from the Ephs, but Williams first-year Nicole Reich battled back to win the second set, 6-3, and held on to win a great third set, 7-5, capping off yet another great match between two national powerhouses.

The Lord Jeffs return to action Tuesday, Apr. 8 when they resume their NESCAC schedule with a 4 p.m. match against Tufts University.
