Amherst Tops Cornell 6-3 in California to Open Spring Season

Jill Wexler played to a pair of hard-fought wins.
ROLLING HILLS, CA - The 4th-ranked Amherst College women’s tennis team opened their spring season this afternoon at the Jack Kramer Club in Rolling Hills, California against Cornell University. Amherst won four of the six singles matches, and two of the three doubles bouts en route to a 6-3 overall victory.

Amherst posted a 1-1 record last fall in dual matches, including a 9-0 win over Wesleyan, and a hard-fought 6-3 loss to archrival Williams College. The Lord Jeffs also competed at the ITA Championships at MIT, where junior standout Brittany Berckes (Secaucas, NJ) played all the way to the semifinal round of competition. The Jeffs wrapped their fall slate playing at the annual New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) at nearby Mount Holyoke College.

After the winter break, Amherst returned to action today against a Division I foe from the Ivy League. In double’s play, Amherst’s top pair of Berckes and sophomore Natasha Brown (Los Angeles, CA) dropped an 8-1 result to Cornell’s team of Natalia Sanchez and Stephanie Kent.

The Lord Jeffs were able to take the number two and three doubles matches with close victories by the pairings of Jill Wexler (Beverly, MA) with Laura Danzig (Allendale, NJ), and Mimi Bell (Cleveland, OH) with Anuja Ankola (Scarsdale, NY).

Kent toppled Berckes in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 in the top singles match, while Amherst sophomore Carlissa King (Laurelton, NY) battled Elizabeth Googe for a three-set win at number two.

Cornell’s third and final victory on the day came from captain Shayna Miller over Brown in the number three singles match, 6-4, and 6-3. Amherst swept the three through six matches with wins from Wexler, Bell, and Laken King (Laurelton, NY). After dropping the first set 6-2 to Leah Seyburn, Bell battled back for 6-3 and 6-1 wins to take the number five match in three sets.

The Lord Jeffs will continue to play this week in California, traveling to face Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow, before an off-day on Tuesday. The Jeffs will also play road matches at Azusa Pacific, Redlands, Cal State-Fullerton, and Claremont before returning home from spring break.
