MEDFORD, MA – The sixth-ranked Amherst College women’s tennis team increased its winning streak to 10 matches with a 5-4 victory at 14th-ranked Tufts University. The Lord Jeffs (10-1, 3-0 NESCAC) won two doubles matches before picking up three points in singles play against the host Jumbos (6-2, 4-1 NESCAC).

Amherst senior tri-captain Anuja Ankola (Scarsdale, NY) and sophomore Mimi Bell (Cleveland, OH) teamed up for an 8-5 win in the No. 2 doubles match, while junior Jill Wexler (Beverly, MA) and first-year Laura Danzig (Allendale, NY) earned an 8-2 victory at No. 3.

Tufts’ top pair of Meghan McCooey and Julia Browne continued to perform well with an 8-2 win over Amherst’s sophomore tandem of Natasha Brown (Woodland Hills, CA) and Carlissa King (Laurelton, NY). Brown and McCooey won the ITA National Small College Doubles Championship this past fall and make up one of the top pairings in Division III.

Browne and McCooey were equally impressive in singles play, defeating King and Wexler in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, respectively. Erica Miller of Tufts earned a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Brown in the third match, as the Jumbos’ top three players took home big wins.

The bottom of Amherst’s singles lineup came through for the Lord Jeffs, with sophomore Laken King (Laurelton, CA), Bell and Danzig each earning two-set victories. Tufts lost its first NESCAC match of the season, while Amherst joins Middlebury (2-0) and Williams (0-0) as the only remaining unbeaten teams in conference play.

The Lord Jeffs will return to action this weekend when they host Connecticut College Friday at 4 p.m. and Wellesley on Saturday at 11 a.m.
