Amherst Tops Middlebury 7-2 to End Regular Season

MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Amherst College women’s tennis team wrapped the 2008-09 regular season this afternoon with a 7-2 win over NESCAC rival Middlebury College. The Lord Jeffs improved to 15-1 (7-0 NESCAC) with the victory, while Middlebury falls to 9-8 this season.

Amherst dropped just one match in doubles play, with Amherst’s ones and threes winning easily. Amherst’s Brittany Berckes (Secaucas, NJ) and Natasha Brown (Woodland Hills, CA) defeated Kurien/Stone in the top spot, while Jill Wexler (Beverly, MA) and Laura Danzig (Allendale, NJ) won 8-1 at number three.

In singles play, Berckes retired while trailing 3-2 in the first set of the top match, while all five of her Amherst teammates won in straight sets. Laken King (Laurelton, NY) dominatd in the number five match, winning 6-0, 6-1 over Anna Burke.

Wexler, Danzig and Brown all earned singles wins to play a role in scoring two points for Amherst, while Carlissa King (Lauretlton, NY) won 6-2, and 7-5 at number two, and Mimi Bell (Cleveland, OH) won at number six.

Amherst will head into the upcoming NESCAC Tournament as the top seed, playing at host Williams next weekend. Match-ups and match details are still to be determined with play starting Friday, May 1.
