Amherst Tops Little Three Foe Wesleyan 9-0 at Home

Danzig
First-year Laura Danzig clinched the win with her
6-1, 6-1 singles rout.
AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College women’s tennis team rebounded from a tough dual-match season-opening loss to Williams yesterday, with a convincing 9-0 win over visiting NESCAC and Little Three archrival Wesleyan University this afternoon.

In doubles play, the top two Amherst teams of junior Brittany Berckes (Secaucus, NJ) and Natasha Brown (Woodland Hills, CA) and Jill Wexler (Beverly, MA) and Laura Danzig (Allendale, NY) easily topped their Cardinal opponents. Berckes-Brown defeated Wesleyan’s top pairing of Ursu-Miller 8-3, just minutes after Wexler-Danzig toppled McDougal-Holmes 8-1 at number two.

In by far the best match in doubles competition, Amherst’s Carlissa King (Laurelton, NY) and senior captain Anuja Ankola (Scarsdale, NY) battled Wesleyan’s duo of Simchik-Alvarado. The Lord Jeffs held a 6-3 lead, before the Cardinals responded with three straight games to tie the match at 6-6. King and Ankola remained calm under the pressure, and held on for an 8-6 win to sweep the doubles round of play.

In singles action, Amherst needed just two wins to close the books on its first dual match win of the 2008-09 season. Those wins came in just over 40 minutes on courts three and five, as Brown and Danzig easily ran away with two-set wins.

Brown defeated Wesleyan’s Holmes in the number three singles match, 6-0, 6-0, while
Danzig toppled Linda McDougal 6-1, 6-1. With the match clinched in Amherst’s favor, the Lord Jeffs visibly loosened up and closed out every remaining singles bout.

Almost simultaneously, twin sisters Laken and Carlissa King finished off wins in the number two and four matches. Wexler followed suit with a 6-0 second set rout after edging Hannah Berkman 6-3 in their opening set.

Berckes turned up her game down the stretch to complete the singles sweep in the top match, winning 6-4, 6-4 over Sarah Miller.

Amherst will return to action next weekend at the NEWITT Tournament.
