Jeffs Wrap up Perfect Weekend with Wins Over Vassar, Bates

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The second-ranked Amherst College women’s tennis team wrapped up a perfect weekend with 9-0 wins against Vassar College and Bates College Sunday afternoon at the Josselyn Tennis Courts in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The Lord Jeffs improve to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the NESCAC. They will have a long rest before returning to action with three difficult conference matches in a span of four days. After taking on Colby on Saturday, Apr. 16, Amherst will face fourth-ranked Williams on Sunday and fifth-ranked Tufts on Tuesday.  

Amherst had little trouble with Vassar in doubles play and won each singles match in straight sets. Laura Danzig ’12 (Allendale, NY), Natasha Brown ’11 (Woodland Hills, CA), Jen Newman ’14 (Haverford, PA) and Lauren Slutsky ’14 (Palm City, FL) each surrendered only two points in their wins, while Caroline Richman ’13 (Pacific Palisades, CA) lost three points in her win at number two. Laken King ’11 (Bayside, NY) rounded out Amherst’s competitors with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at number four.

In doubles action, King and Slutsky shut out their counterpart in the No. 3 match, while Richman and Newman earned an 8-1 win at number two. In the top matchup, Brown and Danzig defeated Vassar’s Joy Backer and Nicole Block, 8-4.
