Laura Danzig '12 teamed up with Jordan Brewer '14 to win the 2011 ITA Regional Doubles title.

LEWISTON, Maine - Jordan Brewer ’14 (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and Laura Danzig ’12 (Allendale, N.Y.) captured the 2011 USTA/ITA New England Regional Doubles Championship to headline Amherst’s strong showing at this weekend’s tournament hosted by Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

Seeded second, the Lord Jeff duo opened play with a hard-fought 9-7 win over Wellesley’s Marie Watanabe and Sojung Lee. Brewer and Danzig would then defeat Williams’ Maria Pylypiv and Monica Pastor 8-4 before upending Tufts’ Lindsay Katz and Shelci Bowman by the same score.

With a berth in the championship match on the line, the Lord Jeffs bore down, edging out Middlebury’s Lok-Sze Leung and Sally Wilkey 9-7 to set up a showdown with the Ephs’ Nancy Worley and Kara Shoemaker. Having already defeated Williams’ pairing 8-4 in a dual match earlier this season, Brewer and Danzig finished strong, scoring an 8-5 decision over Worley and Shoemaker to claim the 2011 doubles title.

Also standing out in doubles play were the Jeffs’ Jennifer Newman ’14 (Haverford, Pa.) and Zoe Pangalos ’14 (New York, N.Y.), who posted a 3-1 record en route to a semifinal appearance. The duo began their weekend with a decisive 8-1 victory over Conn. College’s Jen Herbert and Maria Pia Sifuentes before handing Williams’ Caroline Capute and Kathleen Elkins an 8-4 loss.

Newman and Pangalos then defeated Middlebury’s third-seeded Victoria Aeillo and Leah Kepping (8-2) to advance to the semis where they fell to Worley and Shoemaker (8-5), missing out on a chance at an all-Amherst final.

In singles action, Brewer and Danzig each posted a 2-1 mark, advancing to the round of 16. The tournament’s top-seeded player, Brewer defeated Babson’s Sarah Whitaker (7-5, 6-1) and Brandeis’ Carly Cooke (6-3, 6-1) before falling to Kepping 7-6 (2), 6-1.

Playing on the other half of the bracket, Danzig scored wins over Lee (6-1, 6-0) and MIT’s Vynnie Kong (6-1, 6-1) before seeing her tournament run come to an end with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Elkins. Newman, Pangalos and Lauren Slutsky (Palm City, Fla.) each won their opening singles matches before bowing out in the second round.

Amherst will next compete at the Gail Smith Doubles Tournament host by Middlebury on Oct. 8-9.
