Jeffs Shut Out Wesleyan, 9-0

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Amherst women’s tennis team opened its conference slate in impressive fashion Saturday, dispatching of Little Three rival Wesleyan, 9-0.

Capturing all 15 sets played on the afternoon, the Jeffs improved to 2-0 in dual matches, while the Cardinals fell to 1-2 (0-1 NESCAC).

Edging out a win at first doubles, Jen Newman ’14 and Zoe Pangalos ’14 needed an extra session to upend Clare Dubrin ’16 and Genevieve Aniello ’13, 9-8 (7-4). Gabby Devlin ’14 and Sue Ghosh ’16 picked up the win at second doubles, handling Grace Smith ’14 and Lauren Jacobs ’15, 8-1, while Caroline Richman ’13 and Safi Aly ’15 followed suit with an 8-1 triumph over Kiley Robbins ’14 and Nicki Softness ’14.

Newman handed DuBrin a 6-1, 6-3 loss at the top of the singles order, while Richman stopped Aniello, 6-1, 6-4, at second singles. Ghosh dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Robbins, while Pangalos turned away Jessica Seidman ’16 with identical 6-3 sets.

Aly cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Jacobs at No. 5 singles, while Sarah Monteagudo '16 rounded up the lineup with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Softness.

Amherst returns to action on Monday, Mar. 18 at Barry University.
