Jeffs Turn Away Bowdoin, 7-2

AMHERST, Mass. - The top-ranked Amherst women’s tennis team extended its dual-match win streak to five Sunday afternoon with a 7-2 win over NESCAC rival No. 8 Bowdoin.

Now 7-1 on the season, the Jeffs remained unbeaten in league play (3-0), while the Polar Bears suffered their first loss of 2012-13, dropping to 8-1 (2-1 NESCAC).

Jordan Brewer ’14 and Gabby Devlin ’14 headlined Amherst’s doubles teams with an 8-5 victory over Chantalle Lavertu ’13 and Emma Chow ’15. Jen Newman ’14 and Zoe Pangalos ’14 defeated Kellen Alberstone ’13 and Emma Lewis ’14, 8-2, while Caroline Richman ’13 and Safi Aly ’15 upended Tiffany Cheng ’16 and Kate Winingham ’14 at third doubles, 8-6.

Also leading the Jeffs in singles action, Brewer topped Alberstone, 6-3, 6-1, at the top of the order, while Newman handled Lavertu, 6-2, 6-3. Cheng accounted for one of two Bowdoin triumphs, tripping up Richman, 6-3, 4-6, 10-3, at third singles, while Winingham followed suit with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Sue Ghosh ’16.

Pangalos turned away Lewis, 6-3, 6-2, at fifth singles, while Aly dropped just two games to Susanna Howard ’14 at the bottom of the lineup.

Amherst returns to action at the Wellesley Tournament on Apr. 5-7.
