Jeffs Breeze Through Wellesley Nor'Easter Bowl

Contact: Matthew Hart

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The top-ranked Amherst College women’s tennis team dominated the competition at Wellesley College’s Nor’Easter Bowl this weekend, remaining undefeated against Division III opponents as the Jeffs cruised to three 9-0 triumphs and successfully defended their tournament title.

In Sunday’s championship match against second-seeded and 20th-ranked Skidmore, Amherst (10-1) received little challenge from the Thoroughbreds (7-6) despite the last-minute scratch of Jen Newman ’14 from the second singles spot. The Jeffs had previously shut out No. 24 Trinity on Saturday and No. 29 Bates on Friday to reach the title match.

Amherst quickly took a 3-0 lead in doubles play Sunday as Newman and Zoe Pangalos ’14 raced past Skidmore’s Alex Smith and Rachel Plevinsky 8-2 in the No. 2 contest while Caroline Richman ’13 teamed up with Safi Aly ’15 for a third doubles win by the same margin and Jordan Brewer ’14 and Gabby Devlin ’14 completed the sweep as they finished off Lee Ford and Nataly Mendoza 8-4 in the top spot.

In singles play, Brewer capped a terrific weekend at No. 1 as she lasted nearly the entire tournament without dropping a game. After 6-0, 6-0 wins on Friday and Saturday, the Amherst ace beat Mendoza 6-0 in the opener Sunday before a 6-2 triumph in the second set. Richman was nearly as efficient in her third singles win, defeating Hirsch 6-3, 6-0 while Devlin and Aly each won 7-5, 6-2 at fifth and sixth, respectively, to clinch the title for Amherst.

The Jeffs completed the Sunday shutout with wins in both matches to reach a tiebreaker. Moving up to the No. 2 spot for Newman, Sue Ghosh ’16 outlasted Ford 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 while Pangalos mounted a strong comeback to defeat Smith at fourth singles 2-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Amherst met even less resistance in its Friday and Saturday wins, taking down Trinity and Bates by 9-0 margins with straight-set triumphs across the board.

The Jeffs return to their NESCAC schedule on Thursday, April 11, traveling to Connecticut College for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
