Jeffs Shut Out No. 19 Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. - The top-ranked Amherst women’s tennis team rolled to its 10th-consecutive dual match victory with a 9-0 shutout of No. 19 Tufts.

Sweeping its fifth straight opponent, the Jeffs (12-1) remained undefeated in NESCAC play (5-0) and unbeaten against Division III opponents.

Jordan Brewer ’14 and Gabby Devlin ’14 once again notched a win at the top of the doubles order, defeating Lauren Hollender ’13 and Shelci Bowman ’14, 8-2. Jen Newman ’14 and Zoe Pangalos ’14 upended Lindsay Katz ’13 and Samantha Gann ’14 at second doubles (8-4), while Caroline Richman ’13 and Safi Aly ’15 edged out Janice Lam ’13 and Sophie Schonfeld ’15, 8-6.

In singles action, Brewer made quick work of Katz, securing a 6-1, 6-0 triumph, while Newman defeated Gann, 6-3, 6-1. Shutting out Bowman in the first set of a third singles match, Sue Ghosh ’16 took the second, 6-3, while Richman earned a hard-fought, 7-6 (2), 6-1 win over Schonfeld.

Dropping the first frame of her fifth singles match-up with Hollender, Pangalos tied things up with a 6-4 victory in the second before holding on for a 10-8 win in the third. Devlin held serve at the bottom of the lineup, dispatching of Lam, 6-4, 6-0.

Amherst returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 17 against Bates.
