Women's Tennis Opens Season at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Amherst women’s tennis team opened its 2012-13 season with a strong showing during the first day of the Stony Brook Classic.

In doubles, three of four Jeff pairings advanced to Saturday’s semifinals. Down 6-1 in their ‘A’ fight opener against Army’s Eva Sung ’16/Gabriella Spindler ’16, Jordan Brewer ’14 and Gabby Devlin ’14 mounted a furious rally, winning seven straight to close out the match, before dispatching of Navy’s Emani Decquir ’13 and Sam Droop ’16 (8-5).

Jennifer Newman ’14 and Zoe Pangalos ’14 also enjoyed a solid run, scoring wins over Rhode Island’s Karolina Wojciak ’15/Lauren Benoit ’16 (8-2) and Fairleigh Dickinson’s Anna Rapoport ’13/Dina Guzairova ’15 (8-6), before ousting Marist’s Kelsey Raynor ’12/Melissa Carlay ’16, 8-1.

In ‘B’ flight action, Caroline Richman ’13 and Safi Aly ’15 notched a pair of 8-5 wins over Army’s Larraine Saavedra ’13/Kelly Daniel ’16 and Long Island’s Aleksandra Pavlovic ’13/Brittany Thompson ’15, while Sue Ghosh and Sarah Monteagudo posted a 2-1 mark, falling to the Black Knights’ Carolyn Pitman ’16 and Haley O’Connor ’16 (8-5) in the quarterfinals.

Brewer led Amherst in flight ‘A’ singles, recording an 8-5 decision over URI’s Galina Chernykh ’16, while Newman fell to Army’s Erin Colton ’13 (8-3). Ghosh defeated Decquir, 8-6, in ‘B’ flight singles, while Richman handed URI’s Nithila Asokaraj ’15 an 8-2 loss.

Coming back from a 5-2 deficit to Navy’s Logan Antill ’16, Moneagudo staved off ‘C’ flight elimination with a hard-fought 9-7 win, while Pangalos fell to Spindler, 8-6. Aly capped off singles action with a ‘D’ flight sweep of Colgate’s Meredith Rock ’13 (8-0).
