Brewer Paces Jeffs at ITA Regionals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Jordan Brewer ’14 advanced to the singles semifinals and doubles quarterfinals to lead the Amherst women’s tennis team at the ITA New England Championships hosted by MIT.

Going 4-0 through the tournament’s first two days, Brewer is the lone Jeff left standing in the championship’s singles bracket. She opened play with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Babson’s Sarah Whitaker before defeating Williams’ Riqui McCoy (6-3, 6-4) to earn a berth into the round of 16.

Topping Tufts’ Lindsay Katz 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals, she upended Williams’ Nancy Worley, 6-2, 6-4, this afternoon to move into the final four.

Playing with first-year Sue Ghosh, Brewer picked up a pair of wins in doubles action as one of two Jeff teams still in contention. The Amherst duo opened the tournament with an 8-5 victory over Trinity’s Frances Cameron and Morgan Feldman before scoring a decisive 8-1 decision over Simmons’ Meghan Cokely and Sabrina Salmela.

The Jeffs’ Jen Newman ’14 and Zoe Pangalos ’14 have also enjoyed a strong showing, going 3-0 during the first two days of competition. The Amherst pairing began their run with an 8-1 triumph over Colby’s Victoria Abel and Sarah Wiener before downing MIT’s Lauren Quisenberry and Victoria Tam, 8-4. Punching a ticket to the semifinals, Newman and Pangalos then defeated Middlebury’s Lauren Amos and LokSze Leung, 8-6.

Also reaching the quarterfinals on the singles side, Newman defeated Wellesley’s SoJung Lee, 6-0, 6-1, before besting Wesleyan’s Genevieve Aniello, 6-3, 6-2. The junior then outlasted Trinity’s Melita Ferjanic, 6-3, 6-7 (7), 11-9, before falling to top-seeded Leung, 6-2, 6-2.
