CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Jordan Brewer ’14 reached the semifinals of the singles bracket, while Jen Newman ’14 and Zoe Pangalos ’14 advanced to the finals of the doubles tournament as the Amherst women’s tennis team put together a strong showing at the 2012 ITA New England Regional Championships hosted by MIT.
Beginning her run on Friday, Brewer swept Babson’s Sarah Whitaker, 6-0, 6-0, before securing a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Williams’ Riqui McCoy. She then bested her second-consecutive NESCAC rival, shutting down Tufts’ Lindsay Katz, 6-2, 6-0, before dispatching of third-seeded Nancy Worley of Williams, 6-2, 6-4. Squaring off with No. 1 seed LokSze Leung in the semifinals, Brewer finally saw her tournament come to an end, falling 6-4, 6-1.
Hoping to become the third-straight Amherst pairing to take the ITA Regional Doubles title, Newman and Pangalos cruised to a 3-0 record during the Championships’ first two days. The duo began with an 8-1 victory over Colby’s Victoria Abel and Sarah Wiener before defeating MIT’s tandem of Lauren Quisenberry and Victoria Tam, 8-4. Newman and Pangalos then punched their ticket to the semifinals with an 8-6 win over Middlebury’s Lauren Amos and Leung.
Getting off to a fast start this morning, the Jeffs upended Trinity’s fifth-seeded Melita Ferjanic and Hillary Hoyt, 8-4, but fell just short of their bid for the doubles title with an 8-6 loss to Williams’ Rebecca Curran and Kara Shoemaker, the top-seeded duo in the 32-team field.
Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 6 with a dual-match against Williams.
