Jeffs Sweep MIT in Spring Opener, 9-0

Brewer3.jpgCAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Amherst women’s tennis team opened its 2014 spring season on the road Saturday with a dual match sweep of MIT, 9-0.

After going 0-1 in dual matches during the fall, the Jeffs evened their record to 1-1 and handed the Engineers their first loss of the 2013-14 season. MIT is now 11-1 overall.

In doubles action, the dynamic duo of Jordan Brewer ’14 and Gabby Devlin ’14 earned a decisive 8-1 victory from the No. 1 court. In the No. 2 spot, Zoe Pangalos ’14 and Jen Newman ’14 pulled out a 9-8 win while the pair of Sarah Monteagudo ’16 and Safi Aly ’15 took an 8-6 win from the No. 3 position.

Brewer picked up another win from the No. 1 court in singles play, earning wins of 6-2, 7-5. With a 6-2 win in the first set, Devin dropped the second, 6-3, but rebounded in the third (6-4) to claim a win from the No. 2 spot.

Newman, Sue Ghosh ’16 and Pangalos cruised to victories from the No. 3, 4 and 5 courts, respectively. In the No. 6 spot, Monteagudo earned the come-from-behind win after falling in the first set 6-4. The sophomore retaliated with wins of 6-2 and 10-5 to earn the victory.

Amherst is back in action Monday, Mar. 17 and will visit Pomona-Pitzer. The match is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.
