Amherst Cruises Past Tufts, 9-0

Devlin4.jpgLONGMEADOW, Mass. – The fourth-ranked Amherst College women’s tennis team won its third straight NESCAC dual-match with a 9-0 sweep over Tufts University Tuesday at the Grande Meadows Athletic Club in Longmeadow, Mass.

With the win, the Jeffs improve to 11-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The Jumbos lost its second straight 9-0 defeat to fall to 7-7 and 3-3 in league play.

Brewer and Devlin picked up two more wins in singles play. Brewer took the first set on the No. 1 court, 6-3, before sweeping the second set, while Devlin won by scores of 6-2, 6-1 on the No. 2 court. In the No. 3 position, Newman edged Conner Calabro ’17, 7-6, in set one before capping off a win with a decisive 6-1 second set.

Sue Ghosh ’16, Pangalos and Monteagudo took No. 4, 5 and 6 singles, respectively. Ghosh took consecutive 6-1 sets while Pangalos claimed both frames, 6-3, and Monteagudo earned back-to-back 6-4 wins.

Amherst is back on the court Friday, Apr. 18 and is scheduled to host Conn. College at 3 p.m.
