No. 4 Jeffs Sweep Hamilton, Wesleyan, Williams

AMHERST, Mass. – The fourth-ranked Amherst women’s tennis team extended its win streak to six matches with NESCAC victories over Hamilton, Wesleyan and No. 1 Williams on Saturday afternoon.

Defeating the Cardinals (9-0) and the Continentals (8-1) earlier in the day, the Jeffs upset the top-ranked Ephs (7-2) to improve to 15-3 (7-0 NESCAC) on the season. Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Apr. 26 against Middlebury.

Against Wesleyan, Jordan Brewer ’14 and Gabby Devlin ’14 made quick work of Olivia Koh ’17 and Grace Smith ’14, 8-1. Zoe Pangalos ’14 and Jen Newman ’14 dispatched of Clare DuBrin ’15 and Anna Howard ’15 at second doubles, 8-2, while Safi Aly ’15 and Sarah Monteagudo ’16 secured an 8-2 decision over Nicki Softness ’14 and Maddie James ’16.

In singles action, Brewer swept DuBrin, 6-0, 6-0, while Devlin dispatched of Smith, 6-4, 6-2. Newman handled Koh at third singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Sue Ghosh ’16 scored a 6-3, 6-2 win over Howard. Monteagudo took care of Jessica Seidman ’16, 6-0, 6-2, while Megan Adamo ’17 ousted Softness, 6-0, 6-2.

Headlining Amherst’s doubles pairings against Hamilton, Ghosh and Isabel Camacho ’14 upended Liz Detwiler ’15 and Meg Lee ’14, 8-3. Rebecca Pol ’16 and Maddy Sung ’16 tripped up Winnie Tang ’17 and Isabella Schoning ’16, 8-3. Claire Keyte ’17 and Mira Khanna ’15 recorded the Continentals only victory with an 8-6 third doubles triumph over Claire Carpenter ’17 and Simone Aisiks ’17.

Adamo defeated Schoning at first singles, 6-1, 6-1, while Aisiks downed Khanna, 6-2, 6-3. Carpenter bested Tang, 6-4, 6-3, while Sung turned away Keyte, 6-1, 6-2. Camacho handed Sara Shaughnessy ’14 a 6-4, 6-0 loss, while Lara Min ’16 earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Rachel Friedman ’15, 6-1, 6-2.

In a showdown between a pair of top-five programs, Brewer and Devlin shut down Kara Shoemaker ’14 and Rebecca Curran ’15 at first doubles, 8-4. Pangalos and Newman ground out a 9-7 victory over Maria Pylypiv ’15 and Kathleen Elkins ’14, while Aly and Monteagudo ousted Linda Shin ’17 and Alex Stone ’16, 8-6.

Shoemaker recorded one of two Williams singles wins with a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Brewer. Devlin tripped up Elkins, 6-2, 6-0, while Newman needed three sets to get past Shin, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Ghosh posted a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Pylypiv, while Curran defeated Pangalos, 6-3, 6-2. Monteagudo held her own at the bottom of the order with a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 victory over Monica Pastor ’15.
