HADLEY, Mass. – The Amherst College tennis programs swept the NESCAC weekly awards, as seniors Chris Dale of the men’s team and Jen Newman of the women’s team were named NESCAC Players of the Week, as announced by the league office
For the second week in a row, an Amherst men’s and women’s player was honored with the award. Dale went 3-0 in No. 1 and 2 singles during the week and 1-0 in No. 1 doubles to help lead the men’s team to a 5-0 week with 9-0 wins over Conn. College, Trinity, Hamilton and Wesleyan, before closing out the week with a 5-4 win against No. 5 Williams.
The senior picked up a win in No. 1 singles against Conn. College with scores of 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. Against Wesleyan and Williams, Dale played on the No. 2 court and cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win against the Cardinals. The following day against the Ephs, he won the deciding match despite dropping the first set. Dale retaliated nicely to claim the win with scores of 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 as the third-ranked Jeffs edged their NESCAC rival.
In doubles action, the senior was paired with Russell Einbinder ’16 on the No. 1 court against Hamilton as they handled their opponents, 8-1.
Newman went 2-0 in both No. 2 doubles and No. 3 singles during the week, and was instrumental in the fourth-ranked women’s team’s upset bid against No. 1 Williams. Paired with classmate Zoe Pangalos ’14, the senior earned a decisive 8-2 win against Wesleyan before pulling off the come-from-behind win against the Ephs. Down 4-7 and match point, Newman played a pivotal role in the duo’s rally as they pulled ahead to claim the match, 9-7.
On the No. 3 court in singles play, the senior swept her opponent against Wesleyan, 6-0, 6-0. Concluding the week against top-ranked Williams, Newman handed Linda Shin ’17 her first singles play loss of the spring as she took the match in three sets. With a 6-2 win in the first frame, she dropped the second, 4-6, but responded with a 6-4 win in set three.
