Jeffs Open Season at Columbia Invitational

Ghosh2.jpgNEW YORK, N.Y. - The Amherst women's tennis team opened its 2013-14 season Friday with the three-day Columbia Invitational that featured Columbia, Penn, St. John's and the Jeffs.

Amherst claimed two wins in the first day of competition against its Division I opponents. Sue Ghosh '16 and Safy Aly '15 took an 8-3 win in doubles action against Alex Ion '15 and Brigitte Desnoes '17 from Penn and Sarah Moteagudo '16 defeated Amy Li' 15 of Columbia by scores of 6-4, 2-6, 10-8. 

The Jeffs picked up several wins against St. John’s on day-two and day-three. Jordan Brewer '14 and Gabby Devlin '14 won from the No. 1 court and No. 2 court respectively with scores of 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 and 6-4, 1-6, 10-3, while Ghosh and Amanda Zalameda '17 won in straight sets. Ghosh won the match in the No. 3 position 6-1, 6-1 and Zalameda took the match 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 6 spot.

In the fourth round of singles play, Devlin and Ghosh added another win to their resume. Devlin played in the one spot and won the match 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 while Ghosh played from the No. 3 spot again and posted scores of 6-3 and 6-1. Monteagudo and Isabel Camacho ’14 won in straight sets from the No. 5 and No. 6 positions respectively, 6-1,6-0 and 6-3, 6-4.

The Jeffs picked up three more wins in doubles play Sunday as Brewer and Devlin claimed their match with a demanding 8-1 score in the No. 1 court. Jen Newman ’14 and Zoe Panaglos ’14 won 8-4 from the No. 2 spot and Aly and Ghosh added another doubles win with an 8-5 advantage from the No. 3 position.

Newman added a win in singles play as well. After taking the first set handedly 6-1, she fell in set two 3-6 but retaliated to take the match with a 10-5 score in the third and final set.

Amherst returns to the courts Friday, Sept. 27 for the three-day ITA Tournament at Williams.
