Amherst Kicks off Season with Trio of Wins at Roger Williams Invite
Senior tri-captain Jaclyn DeMais took home Tournament MVP honors at the Roger Williams Invite for the second consecutive year.
BRISTOL, RI – The Amherst College volleyball team opened its 2007 season today at the Roger Williams Invitational with a trio of wins over Rivier College, University of New England, and the host Roger Williams University. Amherst started last season with wins over the same teams on its way to a 19-1 start.
Amherst started its season off with the Rivier Raiders, taking a 3-1 victory. Amherst took convincing 30-19, 30-18, and 30-25 wins in games one, three and four of the match, respectively. Amherst lost only a single game on the day, dropping the second frame of the Rivier contest, 30-26.
Amherst moved on to face The University of New England, polishing the Nor’easters off in three games by a combined 90-38. The combined victories were a five-point improvement over Amherst’s defeat of the UNE team in last season’s tournament.
The Jeffs cruised into their final match of the day with the host Hawks, only to snap through another three-games-to-none win. In the finale, Amherst registered 30-22, 30-12, and 30-18 marks.
Leading Amherst statistically in the tournament was senior tri-captain Jaclyn DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ). The 2006 Roger Williams Invitational MVP racked up 43 kills on the way to her second straight Tournament MVP selection.
Joining DeMais on the All-Tournament Team was senior Whitney Kouvaris (Jacksonville, FL), who had a number of kills, including eight against each Rivier and Roger Williams.
Once again, junior Sara Heller (La Canada, CA) is dishing out the assists for Amherst, as she put in another impressive performance at the Invitational, piling up 69 assists on the day.
Amherst had a solid effort from its first-years, highlighted by seven digs against Rivier from Erin Camp (Encino, CA), 19 assists against UNE from Katherine Jordan (Los Altos Hills, CA) and 14 digs from Rachel Yorke (Los Angelos, CA) against RWU.
The Jeffs return to action Wednesday with the 2007 home-opener against the visiting Owls of Keene State at 7 p.m.
