Amherst Wraps up Weekend with 3-0 Win Over Hamilton
Junior Bethany Belisle had a team-high 10 digs in the Jeffs' win over Hamilton.
The first set featured several early lead changes, with the teams notched up as late as 10-10. Leading 12-11, Amherst scored seven consecutive points to take a seemingly comfortable lead, but Hamilton bounced back with a four-point run of its own to trail 19-15. The Lord Jeffs regrouped and scored six of the set’s next seven points to hang on for a 25-16 win.
The second set was much of the same, with Amherst failing to pull ahead until late. The Jeffs forced the Continentals into a timeout when they went on a 5-1 run to take a 20-14 lead, and the hosts once again pulled away for a 25-16 victory.
Hamilton jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the third set, but the Jeffs pulled ahead 7-6 thanks to a trio of service aces by sophomore Jackie Berkley (Fullerton, CA). The teams continued to battle back and forth, with Amherst calling a timeout while trailing 13-12. The visitors looked poised with a 15-13 edge, but the Jeffs closed out the set and the match on a 12-2 run, earning a 25-17 third-set win.
First-year Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, CA) once again paced the Jeffs by hitting at a .522 clip with 14 kills and six digs. Senior Alison Munzer (Los Angeles, CA) and sophomore Laura Hyman (Glencoe, IL) added 10 and eight kills, respectively, with sophomore setter Katherine Jordan (Los Altos Hills, CA) dishing out 31 assists.
On defense, Amherst got 10 digs from junior Bethany Belisle (Austin, TX), nine from sophomore Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, CA), eight from first-year Katherine Kanoff (Pacific Palisades, CA) and six from sophomore Erin Camp (Santa Monica, CA). Yorke and Camp also combined for seven service aces.
Senior Kristen Selden (Southborough, MA) led Hamilton with seven kills, while sophomore Alex Singh (London, England) had four kills, seven digs and a pair of aces. Senior libero Amber O’Connor finished with a match-high 12 digs, sophomore Kelsey Lawler (Irvine, CA) had 14 assists, and sophomore Elizabeth Reid (Amherst, NY) totaled three blocks.
The Lord Jeffs return to action Tuesday, Oct. 21 when they travel to take on archrival Williams College at 7 p.m. in a crucial NESCAC match.
