Jeffs Pick Up 3-0 Home Win Over Smith

AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win over local rival Smith College this evening at LeFrak Gymnasium. Amherst dominated the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-16, before falling behind the Pioneers 17-13 in the third set. The Lord Jeffs recovered to pull out a 25-21 win in the third frame and clinch the match. Amherst improves to 11-3 with the victory, while Smith falls to 4-9 on the year.
Amherst spread around the scoring in the first two sets to cruise to a pair of convincing wins. In the opening two frames, Amherst's one-two punch of Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, CA) and Katherine Kanoff (Pacific Palisades, CA) banged home six and seven kills, respectively. Junior setter Katherine Jordan (Los Altos Hills, CA) played the first two sets and dished out 17 assists.
In the third set, Smith hung with Amherst blow-for-blow, with the score deadlocked at 13-13 midway through the set. Smith rolled off four straight points to hold a 17-13 lead, its largest of the set. During the stanza, Amherst hit into Pioneer blocks a handful of times to keep the score close.
The Lord Jeffs responded down the stretch to pull out a 25-21 win, taking the match three sets to none. At the end of the night, Meier registered a match-high 14 kills on 28 total attempts, with just three errors. Kanoff added seven kills, while first-year Emily Waterhouse (Sherman Oaks, CA) and junior Laura Hyman (Glencoe, IL) had five kills apiece.
Amherst junior tri-captain Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, CA) picked up 17 digs and was impressive on the back line, while Kanoff added 11 digs of her own. Smith was paced offensively by Mikal Minarich with 10 kills. Laurel Belton added five kills and eight digs for Smith.
The Lord Jeffs will play Emmanuel College, University of New England and Eastern Connecticut State University this weekend at the Crabtree Classic at ECSU.
