Amherst Opens Crabtree with 3-0 Win Over Emmanuel

WILLAMANTIC, CT - The Amherst College volleyball team opened up play at the 2009 Crabtree Classic at Eastern Connecticut State University this evening with a 3-0 win over Emmanuel College. Amherst improved to 12-3 on the year with the 25-17, 25-19, 25-13 victory. The Lord Jeffs will face off against both sides from both the University of New England and ECSU in tomorrow's final day of the tournament.

Amherst was led by sophomore Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, CA) once again this evening who hammered home a match-high 20 kills in the effort. Junior middle-hitter Laura Hyman (Glencoe, IL) added six kills and three blocks, while sophomore Katherine Kanoff chipped in with five kills.

Defensively, junior tri-captain Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, CA) led the team with a dozen digs and just one receiving error on 14 receiving attempts. Rookie Kristin Keeno (Honolulu, HI) added seven digs for the Jeffs, while junior tri-captain Jackie Berkley (Fullerton, CA) had a pair of blocks. First-year setter Callie Neilson dished out 22 assists to lead Amherst.

For Emmanuel, both Nicole McAllister and Diana Grimaldi picked of five kills, with Kathryne Olsen registering 21 helpers. Megan Clary and Jenna Ross led Emmanuel defensively with 16 digs and 15 digs, respectively.

Amherst will face the University of New England tomorrow at 2 p.m., before wrapping up the tournament with the host side from ECSU at 4 p.m.
